Actor
Shiv Pandit, who turned to films with ‘Shaitan’ after doing a
successful TV show like ‘FIR.,’ will soon be seen in the ‘Boss’, a
commercial masala entertainer. He confesses that he had become choosy
after his first movie as he wanted to do a commercial film to reach a
larger audience.
Shiv Pandit does not want to be slotted
The ‘Shaitan’ hero is looking to break out of the typecast with the release of the masala entertainer ‘Boss’
How did you get the role?
I am here because of two people, Akshay Kumar and Ashwin Vardhe, my producer who liked me in ‘Shaitan’. He offered me this role. And when I expressed my interest, Ashwin spoke to Akshay who was filming in Muscat. It is there after we met to discuss further. I went in thinking that I will have to prepare for an audition. But Akshay straight away told me you know you will have to play my brother in the movie. He then asked me, do you smoke? I said, no and then asked do you drink? I said no. And Akshay congratulated me and just said that you are doing my film! I feel Akshay likes to associate himself with people in whom he sees his own self and value system. I am grateful to him and will never forget Akshay.
I have also been offered two more films during the shooting of ‘Boss’. Initially, I thought they were joking. But to my surprise they were serious and I am thankful to Akshay Sir for having faith in me and giving me this chance. Akshay has given me this opportunity because he must have seen some quality in me as well.
On the fear of being slotted?
Right from the start of my career, people have been trying to slot me. I did ‘FIR’ on Television and right from there people had a particular idea of what kind of an actor I am and what character would suit me. I have met many directors and they have told me that I can only do a certain kind of roles. After ‘Shaitan’, doing ‘Boss’ I am sure people will change their perception. I wouldn’t say this is my idea to get into an image makeover. I would like to do different kind of roles.
What is your take on doing different kinds of roles?
I have received much appreciation for my role in ‘Shaitan’. I have indeed been dabbling much into comedies. In ‘Shaitan’, it was an action oriented and slightly edgy kind of a character. And now in this film, I have a more commercial role, that of a clean cut romantic hero. And it is really different from ‘Shaitan’.
Do you have any fears of being overshadowed by Akshay Kumar?
Akshay Kumar is a superstar and there is no way anyone can overshadow him. I have played my role with complete sincerity. I am the romantic lead and because of my romantic angle some things happen and Akshay Sir steps in to set it right. And then there is the father — son angle also in the film. At the end of the day, Akshay doesn’t try to overshadow anybody. He is a superstar. If people recognize my work and say that Shiv has played that particular role well, I will be happy. I am not competing with anyone and not with Akshay Sir in any measure. I have been given a role, which I have played with much effort and honesty.
What kind of a mentor has Akshay been to you?
One day I expressed a desire to see his gym and he showed it to me right then and there. And he made me slog. Akshay is very chilled out on the sets. He is very normal and grounded. He sits in his black pants and tees and there is no air about him. But the moment the shoot begins, he becomes a changed person. And when I was giving my shot, I was like this is Akshay and my first scene with him is as we two brothers are meeting. It was a highly emotional scene.
Are you single?
Yes, I am single and I am focusing only work. I don’t have time for anything else. So, I don’t get any free time for mingling. I believe at the right time and right place I will find my girl.
