Rajkumar Santoshi all praise for Shahid
Despite the rumours of the actor being a tantrum thrower, the director simply cannot stop raving about his lead’s performance in ‘Phata Poster Nikhla Hero’
Director Raj-kumar Santoshi who is credited to have given a fresh lease of life to many actor’s life is all gaga over Shahid Kapoor’s performance in ‘Phata Poster Nikhla Hero’, though initially he was very unsure to work with him.
“No sooner did Ramesh Taurani tell me that we are working with Shahid, I instantly asked him if he is a tantrum thrower? So many people had informed me about his interference during the shoots with Vishal Bharadwaj as he wanted a lot of changes. But Ramesh assured me that he is a very hard working and a sincere actor,” confesses Rajkumar about his initial apprehensions about casting Shahid in the lead.
On the other hand, he shares that he always recognised Shahid’s acting prowess and says, “I liked his subdued acting in ‘Jab We Met’. Kareena Kapoor had an author-backed role. It is the confidence of Shahid, who made everyone feel that his role too bears importance. When a particular character is loud like Kareena, Shahid had to underplay. At such situations, actors do lose their confidence but hats off to Shahid that he proved his worth in the film and over ruled the feeling of insecurity.”
Talking about the experience of directing him in his current venture, he shares, “Having worked with him ‘PPNH’, I realised his enthusiasm while working on every scene was like he is doing it for the first time. He would always ask if I am satisfied with his take. I am so happy that he has translated my vision so very truly on screen.”
While Shahid also praises the director’s vision saying, “Santoshi ji is a phenomenal director. He is a good actor and narrates everything with his acting prowess from the first scene to the last. Also those who have worked with him have high regards for him. They find him a very intelligent director who comes on the sets with what he wants being very clear about what he wants.” And adds, “I had gone to ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ to promote my film ‘Phata Poster Nikhla Hero’, and Amitabh Bachchan told me that I was very lucky to work with Rajkumar Santoshi and that the film looks good and will do well. And so I followed him totally. His focus on actor is so much that the actor has to perform well. He has opened me to this genre. If the captain of the ship is incapable, the film flops. Rajasthan Royals team did well owing to the guidance of their captain as initially they were just an underdog team.”
Rajkumar is known to have made many woman oriented films like ‘Damini’, ‘Lajja’ and many more, to which the director clarifies, “Yes, I have been very close to my mom. However, I have lost her recently but I have always respected the sanctity of women. I do not like to portray them in a vulgar manner. My film ‘Damini’ showcased rape then and today such mishaps are taking place in our country.” And adds, “I think strict laws need to be made. We can also have serious shows on television to bring about awareness in the society. Indeed we need to respect women at all levels. Women in my films are not just a decorative piece!”
Shahid’s shares his take on the recent atrocities committed on women and says, “Mother is always a mother. Our gratitude for her contribution needs not be forgotten. It is perfectly said a woman is always a better half of a man. We would have been scattered if there were no women in our lives. They are the ones who love to keep the family together.” Giving advise to the male figures in India, he says, “The men of India should respect all women who come their way.”
