Firstpost Bollywood MAMI was better before: Kabir Bedi leaves in a huff Oct 14, 2011 #Kabir Bedi #MAMI #Reliance #TheBigEvent 500 0 CommentsEmailPrint By Lipika Varma
Just when the biggies of Bollywood came down to grace the opening ceremony of Mumbai Academy of Moving Images (MAMI), there was someone who left in a huff, stating it to be an ill-organised festival. Kabir Bedi who came down to grace the opening day of the MAMI film fest, left with a disapproving look and later on posted on a social networking site, “Walked out of the opening ceremony of MAMI Film Festival… ‘Staged’ in cramped, overcrowded theatre lobby. Ridiculous! Compete with the best, guys!” Kabir’s companion Parveen Dusanj replied to his tweet from London but that could not calm him down. Several B-Town celebrities who graced the opening ceremony, like filmmaker and head honcho of Yash Raj Films, Yash Chopra, director-producer Ramesh Sippy, actor Gulshan Grover were all praise for the festival and didn’t seem to give much attention to the arrangements. Apart from the opening ceremony being set up in the lobby, the arrangements too were not appropriately done according to Kabir Bedi. Reuters However, actor Kabir Bedi had high expectations from the festival which were washed away when he went for the opening ceremony. He says, “Film festivals are showcased to attract people from all over the globe with attractive films being screened on the first day. Being the opening day of MAMI, it is indeed a big thing and the inaugural ceremony should have been a matter of pride for all of us. It should have been organised in a classy way. Whereas it was a shoddy job with an inappropriate venue, crammed and organised shabbily in the lobby. In Mumbai, we have no dearth of proper venues, then why a spacious and classy venue was not selected by the organisers? We have national and international dignitaries coming in, so I see no reason for the festival to be done in such an unimpressive manner.” Apart from the opening ceremony being set up in the lobby, the arrangements too were not appropriately done according to Kabir Bedi. “The place was too congested and everything was haphazard. The stage and the speakers should have been given utmost significance. People could hardly move about. Attending a festival in a lobby could not go down well for me. Moreover, since Reliance is behind the show, I am sure there would be no reasons for lack of finances,” says Kabir. Being a regular at MAMI, Kabir Bedi opines he has seen the fest being organised in a better manner before. “I have been attending this and many other film festivals for so many years now but I am really very disheartened with the fact that nothing was managed properly at MAMI. Also since Reliance has been associated with so many bigwigs from the film fraternity and if they chose they could have had many more celebrities from all over the globe. But for that everything has to be sorted out much in advance. I must confess, it was much better organised earlier.” However, being a loyalist, Kabir Bedi admits that he will be present at the closing ceremony on 20 October at hotel Sun n Sand, where even the opening took place. “Being a film buff, I will be there for the closing ceremony. Also the day-to-day venue is something very different where we need theatres for showcasing films. The opening and closing ceremony should always be done in an elegant manner and with style. And I fail to understand why the opening ceremony was held in a substandard manner even after such a big company being behind the show,” concludes Kabir Bedi.
