‘It’s a challenge to work with an outside banner’

I am so excited to have got this opportunity to work with Karan (Johar) sir. I am lucky that I passed the audition for the film Student of The Year. Debuting with Dhrama Productions… who wouldn’t like it? I play the role of a pretty damsel, Shanaya,” says Alia Bhatt on her big break and debut Student of The Year.
Since she’s Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter, why wasn’t she launched in a Bhatt film? “My father would have liked to launch me, but I wanted to be debuting with someone other than my home production. It is a challenge to get work from an outside banner. Getting work from your father’s production house is easy,” she says.
Alia had to lose weight before she was signed on. “I was quite chubby before I decided to join films. However, I joined dance classes to lose some baby fat. I suppose thin but healthy should be the mantra. At present, I am just fine with my size which is lean and healthy,” says Alia.
Working with Karan Johar is like a dream come true, according to Alia. “Karan sir is a hard taskmaster when it comes to work. But at the same time he is a caring and kind fatherly figure to all of us. He did spoil us at times by pampering us. Working with him was like knowing the minutest nuances of cinema and acting. His sincere efforts helped us perform to the best of our ability,” she claims.
Will she venture into production and direction? “At present, I am excited about this wonderful character in my debut film. I have to concentrate as an actor and give my hundred per cent to acting,” she says.
Alia has a debut competitor, Farah Khan. Alia laughs at this and says, “I have just begun my journey. What do I say? I just want to perform to the best of my ability.”
