It’s been 50 years and yet every time Dharmendra (Sholay’s Veeru) comes on screen, we still can’t get our eyes off him. Let’s face it, he was the reason ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ rocked at the box office. Yet, with all the silver screen glory, the actor remains a child at heart and a star who even plays an inconsequential role on screen with such sincerity that it becomes memorable. Meet Padma Bhushan recipient and one of the most dashing dudes of Bollywood, Dharmendra as he sits down for a trip down memory lane.

On finally winning an award
I have always believed that I am here to keep my fans and everyone around me happy. I feel if my few humble words can bring happiness to anyone then I have succeeded in life. I talk to even small kids and their smiles bring tons of satisfaction to me. To tell you the truth, I have come so far just because of the love I get. My very existence is because I have people who love me. I feel entertaining all of them is my sincere duty and that any kind of appreciation that comes my way is an award of the job well done. I am delighted to be conferred with the Padma Bhushan. It is important to me and makes me feel happy. It is in addition to the love that I have been getting from my fans for so many years. Their love is my greatest reward. I feel awards are for people who are enormously talented. But I thank my mom and God because of whom I am here today.

On hearing the news
I was caught completely unaware. In so many years, I have only acted the characters given to me, to the best of my ability. The thought that I am the best actor never occurred to me. I think this award should actually go to all my fans and people, because of whose support and love I could exist in this industry for so long. I feel happy about being the recipient of the Padma Bhushan. But I will never forget that this award belongs to the people who love me and I thank them for that.

On family’s reaction
They were astounded at first, but as the news sunk in, everyone was on the top of the world. When I say my family, I also mean my countrymen and brethren.

On rising expectations
I fall short of words. But I feel that with this my responsibility of entertaining my audiences has increased. I will have to try and get serious towards my job now. However at this age, I don’t really know how will I do that. But whatever work that falls in my kitty henceforth, I promise to play all to the best of my ability and with sincerity.

On choosing roles
I think now I will have to choose good characters in order to bring happiness to my audiences. With the help of the almighty and people around, I hope I will be successful at getting meaningful roles. For whatever little acting is left in me, I now plan to use it in a way that brings happiness, to me and to those who matter.

Life’s changed
I have always taken life as it comes. I think I am destiny’s child. I have just moved ahead in life with whatever it has given me, with my parents’ and God’s blessing. It’s His blessings that I have been able to reach this position in life.

On the years in the industry
It is difficult to put my feelings in words. Even today I feel the same as I did when I first came to the industry. I feel enthusiastic and fit as a fiddle, even at this juncture of my life. I thank God for all this. I may have faced many hurdles in my life time, but in all that I have learnt one thing: I feel no one needs to sit and brood over what went wrong, when you can rejoice at the good things that life has bestowed on you. Remember, you live just once, so why not live it with success and without the fear of ups and downs. I am happy being a part of this industry. I have received a lot of love from one and all within the industry and outside it too.

Looking ahead
I am no one to decide the future. I do not believe in planning either as I believe that the almighty will have a plan for me. I just follow him. It is the love from my folks that will decide my future.

On star sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol
They have given me my time now. They share all the responsibilities and allow me to do everything I may have missed out on while I was busy working. Their love and care gives me utmost satisfaction. I am happy that my first wife Prakashji knows what I need. She has always stood by my side. Hema has also given me all her love and support and Esha and Aahna’s love makes me a complete father.

On keeping busy
I have a few films in the pipeline. I have always been a ‘shayar’, so whenever I get time I pen down my thoughts.

Message for the youth
India’s future depends on our youth. They should always do good for their soil. Working ahead for the betterment of the country should be the motto of every Indian. We should all make India and its ancestors happy by making our country a better place to live in.
