‘A Rs 300cr mega-hit not far’

DC | Lipika Varma | 14th Dec 2012
He is known by many names, Chulbul Pandey, Dabangg Khan, Tiger Khan, Bhai… and Salman Khan says he is many of these characters in real life.
“These are names given by you guys (the media) only. In fact I am sometimes ‘Chulbul Pandey’ especially when I need to pull someone’s legs. I occasionally become ‘Dabangg’, too, but on the whole I never intend to hurt anyone. I love to turn into a ‘Tiger’ for the high society,” says Salman, adding, “But I like the kids, they just call me Salman or Salman Khan.”
The star will be acting in the remake of Chiranjeevi’s Telugu hit Stalin and is quite excited about it. “Yes I have liked Stalin as it is based on humanitarian issues.
We are remaking this film in Hindi and most probably Sohail (Khan) will direct it. We are in the scripting stage at the moment and we will be making a lot of changes as I do not want to get into any controversies by remaking the film as it is.”
With movies making more money than ever before, Salman says that the day isn’t far that the  Rs 300 crore barrier will be broken. “We will definitely bring box office collections to more than Rs 300 crore. But not now, it will take at least three to four years. But I promise this change will be brought about by us.”
The superstar says that it is more important than ever that he stays fit at this stage of his career. “I am in my forties, so I need to be fit to do action roles. Most of the characters I play are larger-than-life ones and I need to look younger.
“Yes! In Suraj Barjatya’s next film I will be donning the character of Prem, my first ever screen name that got me the ticket to fame in Maine Pyaar Kiya.”
The actor is all praises for co-star Sonakshi Sinha, who debuted with Dabangg. “She has performed brilliantly. In fact, after finishing Dabangg we started with the sequel. She had to keep her weight on for this role as she was to be pregnant. After completing the film, she lost the weight. Sonakshi will be performing in Dabangg 3 too.”
His brother Arbaaz Khan has directed D2 and Salman thinks that he has done a great job. “He is a sincere guy. In fact, I feel he is like Feroz Khan, who donned all the three hats that of an actor, director and producer. Arbaaz is a sensible director. We were very comfortable and would sort out our creative differences in an orderly manner.”
“We would have been a little more careful with the finances if the money was borrowed from outside. But with Malaika (Arora Khan) being the producer it was a khandaan affair. Not that we spent injudiciously, but yes, with our own finances if something was needed then we would not think twice.”
The superstar also has a word of thanks for his city fans, “I love Hyderabad and my Hyderabadi fans for watching my films with great enthusiasm. I love them all for being with me always. Their love encourages me to give them my best. Entertaining them makes me proud. They have a great sense of Hindi movies too.”
