Earlier films did not carry words like….”Bitch or bastards” Arjun Kapoor

Arjun Kapoor speaks to Lipika Varma in an exclusive chat about his films etc
On his comfort Zone-And his character in Finding Fanny-
I think any character that an actor does should be out of the comfort zone. The day an actor gets into his comfort zone then audience will get bored of him. Whatever roles I may have done those characters will have a shade of me but that is not me in real. I have never played only Arjun.Performing the character of Savio was exciting because the character was revealing all his angst in the film through this character I brought in negativity and bitterness filled in him, merely because of the conditions he survives in but he is not the villain like usually we see in Hindi films. If a character has negativity in him it makes him dark. This guy is a regular boy but he has not dealt with the things he witnesses. Somewhere he blames the World…like all these negative things are happening with me because of his “Khandan” and friends .He never bothered to look into himself finding faults in him and how he could rectify those shortcomings in him. He has never been able to express himself. Whenever he tries to do something he ends up doing it adversely. I like the character of Savio because he is away from himself. I feel Homi has utilized all my personal traits well. Bringing in the   dead pan humor and vulnerability I tried to bring it out through my personal experiences in life. I added to all that to the textures and layers to the character. His Physicality etc is what I loved about Savio. As his journey begins you do not know anything about Savio as his journey begins. But no sooner the films progresses you realize as to what all he confronted during his lifetime, and so he has turned to be a character like this. You will see a new Savio at the end of the film. The ensemble cast in the film unlike in English film we watch, which does not have any dance and songs. Finding Fanny is a film within five characters .You can see the journey, and the graph of this character. Therefore I got excited to perform this role.
Home work done for this Goan character-
Homi was the home work. In any film finally the director defines the character, he helps you make and shape the character the way he looks at him…I was excited also had a nervous feeling in my stomach. We had a lot of conversations’ about his character. Homi allowed me to understand Savio’s character. He said you will have to stay in Goa for a week. I put my Tattoo’s on ,trimmed my hair and put my phone off and started living the character of Savio.Homi told me to faf and that’s how my character excelled. Started wearing his clothes living and thinking like him as I also cut off from the rest of the World and thus I was a guy from Kokoli….Goa.
Working with the stalwarts…Naseer,Pankaj and Dimple
I did not feel any nervousness sharing screen with Naseer ji Pankajji and Dimple mam. It was amazing…working with them was my excitement. I may be one of the actors from the new generations all of us we love to work with different actors. This film needed a cast like this. You should forget that Deepika and I am the Hero and Heroine...It is an ensemble cast. They add credibility to the film, these three actors being with us will create excitement in the minds and the hearts of the audiences. Apart from me and Deepika the conventional cast, they made us better than the film. They maintain sanctity, they are calm and compose. We never spoke about acting Naseerji told me how he met my father and about his journey.Pankaj ji spoke about his beginning in the film-dom. Dimple Mam told us how she started in the films and her experience of spending time.  I have made a decent connection with all of them after working in Finding Fanny. I can at least pick up my phone and talk to them now.
 Hindi and English films-
Hindi as a language is dramatic. It lends you to dramatic action on par with speech and gestures you make. The language itself allows you to act. English is slightly different. Unless you do it theatrically. It is spoken fluently. But Hindi actors tries to put on while speaking, they  forget  they are doing Hindi film….But for Finding Fanny when I started with my typical English dramatic dialogue delivery…Homi  corrected me saying,” Damned you have to speak normally!” Yes! Working with Homi my speaking power improved. I did not try to stress on unnecessary connotations .It does take recondition yourself to perform in English, which has to come simply from eyes and body language.
On the usage of Cuss words in films
For our generation while speaking in normal life simple cuss words will not hype us. But for the grown up generation they will find it vulgar. The now gen speak slang words naturally…you may feel rude, but they do not take it as vulgar.  Earlier films did not carry words like”Bitch or bastards” But in the present scenario these words are used normally. However, whatever is relevant and falls within the limits of censorship also to carry the story ahead is added to the script.”
On Tevar
I play a Kabbaddi player. What I liked the most doing in the film is –I was working rather acting for the first time in from of my dad and uncle. They just gave me a clear space without interfering .This being my home production all I can say is that”I am emotional about “Tevar…which will release soon.
