All I care about is entertaining: Farah Khan
Farah Khan gets vocal about her formula for success and how it feels to get back to working with SRK after seven years
Farah Khan, who has had a successful run as a filmmaker, says that it is not the big stars in her films that make them hits. “I feel my films offers twists to the formula which make them more entertaining. All I really care is to entertain my audiences,” says Farah, who describes her latest film Happy New Year as a “genre binding” film.
Entertaining is the greatest of all challenges a filmmaker faces, according to her. “It is really difficult for a filmmaker to entertain audiences. We need to stay true to our craft and make films that appeal to audiences around the world.” Farah, however, doesn’t discount the value of star power in her films. “Of course a film like Happy New Year will definitely create a certain kind of buzz because of its star value. However, we have also have Vivaan Shah as part of the cast. So you cannot say I only work with big stars,” Farah adds with a smile. The filmmaker goes on to talk about the film. “HNY has a dance theme but it is a proven fact that the group is amongst the worst dancers,” she says. “The competition that you see in the film is combined with a heist track. That is also a formula, just like romantic films follow a certain formula. What makes a difference is how you go about using the formula in your own way; add your own ideas efficiently. That’s when it works fabulously,” Farah adds. She uses her own film Om Shanti Om to elucidate her point further. “Many films have been made on the theme of reincarnation. But I added the retro look and feel to the film to make it different. These twists manage to entertain my audience,” she says.
Farah has joined forces with her once-upon-a-time best buddy Shah Rukh Khan after seven years in Happy New Year. There have been highs and lows in their equation over the past few years. Farah says, “It’s a great feeling to get back together after seven years. My last film with him was Om Shanti Om. All’s well that ends well.”
She adds, “HNY has been an enlivening but also a tiring experience. I will take a six-month holiday after the release of the film to spend time with my children.
