The controversial title: Singh Saab The Great

Director Anil Sharma clarifies its ‘Saab’ not ‘Sahib’, therefore it should not hurt any sentiments
Sunny Deol’s upcoming movie, ‘Singh Saab the Great’ has run into trouble with the Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which has objected to the title of the film. The SGPC believes it is a sacred title bestowed on the ‘Jathedars’ of the five ‘Takhts’ and the ‘granthis’ of the Golden Temple and therefore, it should not be used for commercial purpose.
“The title of the film must be changed and the film must be checked by the SGPC’s review committee,” said Karnail Singh Peer Mohammed, head of All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF).
However, during the music launch recently held in Mumbai, director Anil Sharma clarified, “The title of my film is ‘Singh Saab the Great’, and it is not ‘Sahib’. So, I see no reason for hurting any ones’ religious feelings at all.” And added, “Look! My film is at its release point. My posters are ready. Moreover, I have just come to know about this hiccup through the newspapers. I have yet received any intimation or any letter from anyone as mentioned in the reports. Unless and until any intimation is directed to me I cannot react to this report at all.”
Further adding his association with Sunny Deol, the lead in the movie, he says, “After ‘Gadar — Ek Katah’ Sunny and me are back. I am very happy about carrying forward our pair after few years again. The outcome of the film is very good and I am sure of its box office success.” And added, “As a filmmaker, we make films to entertain our audiences and without an iota of doubt we do not make films in order to hurt anyone’s sentiments.”
The film is scheduled for a November 22, 2013 release and we need to only wait and watch whether it raises any further eyebrows.
