Getting stars to dance their way

Mumbai
based Samir and Arsh Tanna are a husband and wife duo to be reckoned
with in the dance arena. Not many know that Samir bagged the National
Award for choreographing 'Dholi Taro Dhol Bajey' in 'Hum Dil De Chuke
Sanam'.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali gave them 'Nagada Sangh Dhol Bajey', the dandiya number to choreograph in 'Ramleela'.
Samir says, “I am very happy that the dandiya song picturised on Deepika is being so well appreciated. We wanted to do something better than 'Dhol Bajey'. I handle the men folk and I decided to make them hold real dhols while dancing which was a Herculean task. Arsh had conceptualised the steps for Deepika. She wanted Deepika to do a few rigorous moves with the fast tempo of the song. We decided to play around with the typical traditional steps so that they look fresh on screen." Samir's observations on Deepika were, “She is a thorough professional. It took us at least 10 nights to complete 'Nagada Sangh'. She is very quick to learn and unlearn steps. Deepika and all the others danced to the number bare feet. Deepika's feet were bleeding but she did not complain nor did she call off the shoot."
Having choreographed for 'Lahooh Muah Lag Gaya' for 'Ramleela', Samir says about Ranveer Singh, “I remember when we tried to change some steps which Ranveer was finding hard to master, he refused and told us that even if he had to do 200 rehearsals he did not mind. He is a lovely person and has no airs at all."
Last but not the least, Samir says, “It is not easy to please Sanjay Leela Bhansali. We had to work hard and come up with many different ideas to impress him. Not many know that he has a vast knowledge of dance and music. He would have long discussions on choreography with us."
