Director-producer Karan Johar will soon don a new hat and will be seen venturing as a full fledged actor in director Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Bombay Velvet’. Karan has already tried his hand in cameo appearances in ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ and ‘Luck By Chance’.
What is new now, is that Karan has been off late seen in ‘Koffee With Karan’ title song. And then will be seen in another cameo in ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’. This time he has bagged this cameo merely because of him being quick witted!

Dimple Kapadia opens up about missing hubby Rajesh Khanna The veteran actress talks about subjects close to her heart in an exclusive chat By Liplika Varma/ Published Monday, December 09, 2013

Dimple Kapadia opens up about missing hubby Rajesh Khanna

The veteran actress talks about subjects close to her heart in an exclusive chat

After more than a year of her husband’s death, Rajesh Khanna whom she fondly refers to as Kaka, Dimple Kapadia talks about how he lives on in her heart and through her grandson Aarav who resembles him in every way. She reminisces about her past while talking about her two daughters and about other matters close to her heart.

So, life without Kaka? A long pause follows and with teary eyes she answers, “Do you think he has gone? No, he shall always remain with us.” Turning nostalgic and reminiscing when she was married to Kaka and had come to his house for the first time she says, “He was fond of antiques. He always felt house-proud. I remember before our house got into renovation just after my marriage, there were fabulous and stunning antique pieces. Since I was very small, people around took care of those antiques and unluckily they have been destroyed. With all those antiques, we would have had a wonderful museum. I really miss them.”

Talking about late Rajesh Khanna’s favourite picture, she added, “The favorite picture of Mrs Indira Gandhi with Kakaji is still there. It was his favorite picture and so it always hung in the middle of the drawing room.” She continues, “I got married while I was just sixteen. I do not have any regrets for having left the stardom for the sake of my family life. I feel that was my best period. My mother has brought up my daughters Twinkle and Rinke as I was a kid myself. My mom was hands-on grandmother. She took care of both my daughters. She is strong today too at the age of 75 years. We have an age difference of almost 17 years. However, she and my nephew are my responsibility.”

Coming back to her memories of her husband, she recalls, “One fine day the elder one’s [Twinkle] hair cut went haywire and so he got angry on getting a not very pleasant reply from the hair stylist. He blasted saying, “How can he talk to Rajesh Khanna like that!” Such was his spirit. He was not possessive, he always took me for granted and thought it was his birthright to say what he felt. And I was entitled to keep quiet. He would say, “You are lucky that you get to sit next to me!” He was a very clean hearted person.”

She adds about the similarity shared between her grandson, Aarav and his grandfather, “Aarav is exactly like him. He talks less like Kakaji. Whenever I get dressed to go out he will just pass by give a glance and with is head turning towards his right he would comment, “Nani you look exquisite!” And move on.”

Sharing about how Kakaji was right when he said Aarav will be the next super star, she says, “I can see the spark in his eyes. He is mad like Kakaji. I remember once while Kakaji sent a sweet box to Aarav just a year before he died. I told him how can you give him the box without writing anything on it? He then wrote, “To naughty one from the nana whom you love.” That was his style. He could have written, “From the Nana who loves you.” I have clicked a picture and preserved it. When Aarav grows up, I shall present it to him.”

Talking about how her looks can be deceptive, she shares, “For me looks really prove to be deceptive. It is because of the simple and reserved mannerisms I follow that people carry that wrong notion. I am indeed a fun loving and an easy going person who loves a positive atmosphere. I always walk away from irritating and uncalled situations. I always create a wall to avoid communication when things turn ugly.”

About her role in comedy ‘What the Fish’, she shares, “I chose to perform the Sudha Mishra’s character merely because the film ‘What the Fish’ is a comedy film. It would not be too much if I say this is my dream role. I wish I had been offered something like this during the beginning of my career. However, I am very happy and feel blessed to get to work with the new set of directors who have a lot of energy and come up with fresh and hilarious concepts in today’s competitive Bollywoood arena.” On opting for the character she quips, “I really loved the story of ‘What The Fish’. Also, other parallel characters that run so very effectively around me. As an actor I have always been skeptical of my work. Whether I will be able to remember my lines or not! However I do write lines in Roman language but having innumerable lines, I would goof up with the words ‘K’ ‘Kh’ and ‘Ga’. Director Gurmeet convinced me and took me successfully through my dialogues.”

On the cinematic changes she has witnessed from her times, she says, “I do miss all these good directors. However, I have had the opportunity of working with good directors like Raj Kapoor saab, I debuted with his film ‘Bobby’. I remember I was just 16 years and he would walk like a sixteen years old girl. He also narrated the dialogues like that young girl so very efficiently. I just had to copy him exactly. Also, having worked with Gulzar Saab was a great learning experience.” And further added, “However, today the new lot come much more prepared. The directors finish their work on time, and know how to get the actor in mood. Their energies are great and with technical up gradation, cinema has gone to another level.”

Walking down the memory lane and getting nostalgic, she shares, “I remember Nana Patekar taught me how to make use of the props found on the sets. In the film ‘Tum Milo Toh’, for a scene I had to be sitting and knitting while Nana Patekar asked me a few questions. In the end I exit throwing the knitting needles and the wool on him. Cut to another scene. No sooner did I enter I was aghast to notice him knitting and continuing with the questions. I was so stunned that I did not react. But yes this taught me how to make use of all the props that you find on the sets if necessary. The scene turned out to be so very natural.”

Sharing how she chooses to be updated with latest technology but still has not taken to the habit of shopping online, she shares, “The interest of keeping pets like fish, cat and a dog seem to have disappeared. Surfing on laptops and computers has become my favorite. I have a liking for surfing web sites and also I love to read books. Not only it is a pass time but we can also find out the medical facilities by inserting the symptoms of any diseases and know about the usage of medicines. However, I do not like to shop on line.”

Talking about her love for Victorian antiques, she shares, “I love the Christian antiques. Like knowing more about Mother Mary, antique pieces that showcase the crucifixion of Christ. My love for Christian art could be merely because I have studied in the convent schools.”

Kareena Kapoor missing Abhishek Bachchan The actress while shooting in Bhuj for her upcoming romantic comedy By Lipika Varma Published Friday, November 08, 2013

Kareena Kapoor missing Abhishek Bachchan

The actress while shooting in Bhuj for her upcoming romantic comedy

Kareena Kapoor got nostalgic while shooting for Punit Malhotra’s ‘Gori Tere Pyaar Mein’ with Imran Khan in Bhuj, Gujarat as it brought back memories of her debut film, ‘Refugee’. She also confesses that she chose to do the film as it is set in a village atmosphere.
She shares, “Yes, when Puneet told me that we were going to shoot in Bhuj for our film ‘Gori Tere Pyaar Mein’, I felt very happy as I had shot for my first film ‘Refugee’ out there. I took Puneet and the entire team to places where we would relish our food. Especially to a happening restaurant named Prince.” And added, “I had relished delicious food here even with Abhishek Bachchan while shooting for ‘Refugee’. Living in and around the same area where we lived during my debut film literally turned me nostalgic and I was very happy indeed.”
Highlighting the changes in Bhuj city she quips, “I have noticed a wide development in this city of Bhuj. Earlier there were just one flight to commute but now the flights have increased. The entire market areas have developed. All of us are aware of the fact that Gujarat has progressed tremendously. The city has experienced an overall development. It was indeed a treat to shoot out there.”
Coming back to the film, she shares, “I really felt nice when I was made to realise that the second half of the film is totally based on the rural India. In fact, I chose to do the film merely because it is based on the village atmosphere.” Adding about her love for villages, she reveals, “I love the kind of environment we witness in the villages unlike the urban India. I find the people in the villages are yet very innocent; they have a large heart and are always ready to help each other. They are indeed charming and also cherish the simpler joys in life.”
All praises for the film she says, “It is an entertaining film. It has lovely song numbers with a happening music. Everything the audience expects in a film will be there and especially they will love the village part. What more would people want? While they spend such an exorbitant amount for their tickets and if their experience is entertaining, I am sure they will enjoy the film.”
Shedding light on her character, she shares, “I play a social activist. I like to stand up for a cause or a protest immediately. Be it then anti-pollution, anti-smoking or anti-corruption. Basically in the character, I want to go ahead and do something for the people. She thinks cleaning up the entire nation is her responsibility.” About her lover boy in the movie, he adds, “Undoubtedly, our ideologies differ and thereafter I shift to a village where Imran follows me. And this firms the crux of the tale.”
Sharing her experience of working with her co-actor Imran, she shares, “Second time working with Imran brings more contentment. We make a great onscreen couple. Especially, working in his company feels good. I find him different when compared to any other Bollywood actor. Firstly, he is totally a non-filmy guy. He is a little foreigner by heart and loves to do different things. Also he is very charming.” Adding about his professional growth, she adds, “Professionally he has definitely grown a lot. He has done a fantastic job in the film ‘GTPM’. However, I have not seen the entire film; I have just watched the rushes of the film. I would give him 8 out of ten. If he gets more then I shall feel happy.”
Talking about the changes she wants to see in the nation, he shares, “Well in real I just hope the law of our country is totally reassessed, I think that is the dire need of the day. People need to take the law seriously. More than our folks, I think the politicians need to abide by the rules and regulations. I think our country can become a better place to live in provided the politicians try to bring in the necessary changes on par with the law and make the citizens law abiding as well.”
When it comes to choosing her films, she shares that at the end of the day what matters are the people you work with. “Choosing films I do not have any specific strategy. After lending my ears to the narration, I either choose the film or reject it. I have experienced a lot in this industry and I also keep in mind whether we will be compatible or not. I can never work in a stressed atmosphere. Big or small films do not matter to me. It has to be a good script and good people with whom I will be working,” shares Kareena about her secret choice factor. Talking about wrong choices and rejecting films, she adds, “It would not be too much to say that I have left quiet many films. And given those films to so many actresses on the platter. But I am okay with it. I am happy after ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ was successful film and I have been working with Karan Johar since then. I have no regrets. I never like to look back.”
Kareena shares how she has been working out religiously for her next film, ‘Shuddhi’ and says, “I have turned serious with my work outs for the last six months. I am training differently for my next film ‘Shuddhi’, it is a different film. I am not making six packs though.”
Talking about her favourite holiday destinations, she shares, “Being a travel freak while I am free I love to travel abroad to Switzerland and other places. But here in India, I love to go to Rajasthan, Jaipur and Jodhpur. I love these cities for its charm and I find the people very simple. The art and architecture of the city is alluring enough. The food is also very delicious. I also find the princely feelings, the grandeur of the raja maharajahs coming alive in these cities. The weather of these cities is one of the reasons that attract my attention.” And adds, “Since ‘Shuddhi’ shoot begins in December 2013 I will not be able to take holidays or enjoy travelling to any destination.”
Talking about the success ‘mantra’, for her marriage, she shares that there isn’t any, and says, “We courted each other five years before tying the knot. We were never in a hurry. There is no success mantra for our marriage. It is unlike any film which needs to have an item number to make some crores at the box office. However, in a marriage one looks forward for a good companionship, love needs to overrule any hassles what may come. I do not need to cook to make Saif happy.”
Confessing to being a homebody, Kareena shares, “I am a home bird. I do not like to socialise or go for parties. I do not have any filmy friends. All my friends are my school days friends. We do hang out at home, chat sometimes and enjoy sharing our experiences. We also sit at home and watch television. I am very lazy to go out gallivanting. But yes, sometimes we do go out. I love to relax at home.”

Rakesh Roshan who is awaiting the third installment of his superhero series talks about how his son’s humility has kept him going

Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan does not believe in putting on any airs despite his upcoming ‘Krrish 3’ already having left behind major Hollywood movies in terms of hits generated through the Internet. He also divulges about what keeps his superhero son, Hrithik Roshan ticking.

On working with son Hrithik on the sets, the proud father proclaims, “Having launched my son in ‘Kaho Na Pyaar Hai’ (2000), neither did I nor Hrithik ever feel that he needs to be the number one. We do not believe in the number game. In fact, Hrithik too believes in working honestly, sincerely and likes to put in all his energies in the right direction. He is a simple boy who loves to strike a balance between his work and family.” And adds, “Unquestionably, I make just one film in a year.
I need to do a lot of preparations before going on the floors. I take almost six months to sort out my productions job and there after I launch a film.”Coming to his latest release, ‘Krrish 3’, he clearly states, “It took me few years to really come up with ‘Krrish 3’.
When I sat down to script the first draft after finishing ‘Krrish 2’, somehow nothing was finalised. So, I had decided not to do ‘Krrish 3’ at all. After a year when I decided to script again as Hrithik was very keen, surprisingly within the first three months, everything fell in place. When the foundation is strong, there’s no looking back for any filmmaker.”

Shedding light about the characters of the movie, he says, “The super villain’s role too has been shaped up emotionally. Indian cinema needs drama, emotion and thrill, so I have to keep that in mind. I have shown why this super villain has hatred in his heart and mind. However he is not a bad man. We have made these characters keeping in mind some animals like the ant-who has the strength of carrying the biggest leaf on her head. Kangana Ranaut is the chameleon.”

Expressing his satisfaction with the ways the characters have done justice to their roles, he says, “I was more nervous that I will be working with Kangana and Vivek Oberoi for the first time. But when I saw Kangana in her attire, seeing her matching my vision was half my job done. Vivek too has given an excellent performance. These are all animals in the human body.”

Further adding about his homework before going to the shoot, he reveals, “I make small miniatures of the set, thereafter shoot them in videos. We decided to shoot ‘Krrish3’ in Ramoji rao in Hyderabad. There we erected Mumbai, its roads etc.”

Talking about his son’s performance in the film, he shares, “My son Hrithik looks the character. No sooner he appears on the screen, he looked the super hero. When all the producers and directors want to work with him, why should I not work with him and give him something that his heart desires. I am proud of his humility and sincerity. He does not want to compete with anyone and also keeps himself away from the number one race.” And adds, “Hrithik always likes to do what he is asked not to do.
For instance, while he was getting ready for his debut film, the doctor had asked him not to overdo with gym exercises as his bones will not agree to any over dose. But then he decided to go to the gym regularly and came up with his wonderful physique. He is also the doctor for all of us. No sooner anyone falls ill, he rushes to our rooms and starts advising us. We depend on his advice a lot.”

Divulging his trade secret about how he has kept the audience entertained over the years, he discloses, “I always like to watch films while sitting amongst the audiences as it gives you a different feel. Every Friday, I go for the 3 o’clock show and watch films. Every film has its good and bad points.
I love to take away good things from every film. Hence, I feel I am able to make films for audiences belonging to either Jhumri Talliya or Switzerland. I always try to keep emotions involved in films especially for my Indian audiences.”
