Ditching family formula

After producing hit TV soaps like Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki, Kavita K. Barjatya, the daughter of Rajshri Productions’ managing director Kamal Kumar Barjatya, is foraying into feature films with Samrat & Co.
Putting an unhappy marriage behind her, Kavita is the first Barjatya to break away from the family’s bread-and-butter projects — light romances.
Talking about the detective thriller, Kavita says, “It was not an easy task. I was looking forward to something different and I found it with director Kaushik Ghatak. The script is fulfilling and I am sure the audiences will love it.”
After her brief marriage fell apart, did she face any problems from her conservative family to enter the industry?
“My family is undeniably very conservative. Mine was an arranged marriage which lasted hardly for 300 days. I have no regrets. It did take me some time to come out of the stress. But the trust my parents placed on me helped me work overtime. However, it took me eight long years to start the film.”
And though she had the support of her family, it wasn’t a cakewalk for Kavita.
“I learned how to exist in a man’s world,” she says adding, “I did not seek any monetary help from Rajshri. Whatever profit I earned from my TV shows I am investing in making films now.”
