Jiah Khan’s mother Rabiya, sitting in her Juhu apartment’s bedroom, could barely control herself while talking about her daughter who committed suicide last week.
Did you and Jiah have a normal mother-daughter relationship?
Of course. I was also like a friend, mentor, philosopher and guide to her. But I still fail to understand why Jiah did not openly discuss her relationship with Suraj.
What about Jiah’s father?
We were not in touch for the last 15 years. I am married to Thomas for the last 15 years. He has supported me all through and at this juncture too he is the one who has taken care of everything. Yes when I informed him he howled over the phone. And why not? After all he is her father.
Suraj has been detained...
I think that justice is being done to my daughter. She suffered a lot at the hands of Suraj. She told me once about Suraj abusing her physically. I advised her not to take physical abuse from anyone.
Why didn’t you take her to a counsellor?
Counsellor for what? She was not depressed… she was happy professionally. Jiah did not show any anguish or pain. I wish she had opened her heart to me. She was beaten often, which I come to know after reading her letters. Had she disclosed this fact, I would not have left my child alone. I would have followed her everywhere like a police woman.
Any particular incidents that you came to know about later?

Her finger broke thanks to Suraj’s physical abuse. I was totally shattered to hear this from one of her friends. Had I known about this, we would have taken strict action.

But why hide it from you, her mother?

I don’t know how long she was abused. Probably being an educated and highly-qualified girl she tried to hide it from me. Also, maybe she did not want me to worry about the grief and anguish that she was going through. She maintained a dignified silence I believe. Jiah never liked to reveal her embarrassing moments.

Was she a misfit here as she was born a British citizen?

I think she was a misfit on planet earth!

How important was acting to her?

She started acting when she was just five. At the age of nine she acted for some cause for Unicef. She always wanted to be an actor. However, she also nurtured other hobbies like writing poems, stories etc. She was highly poetic at heart. She was also an immensely emotional girl. That’s how I know my baby.
