Jacqueline Fernandez states in no uncertain terms that she’s not part of any film camp. She also talks about life after Kick and how she has had a lot to learn from Salman Khan
Jacqueline Fernandez had her career’s biggest success with Kick, which paved the way for more big-ticket offers. But she doesn’t want to describe herself as a member of the Salman Khan camp, even though she doesn’t hesitate to express her admiration for the superstar. “I don’t think Salman himself believes in camps in the first place. It’s all the work of destiny. Why Salman? I don’t think I belong to any camp. You need to work with everyone if you want to grow in the industry. This is something that Salman himself told me. Salman, for sure, has been very lucky for me. With the success of Kick, I am getting more work. He has taught me to stay positive, remain grounded and never take people for granted. You learn a lot from Salman,” says the actress.
She is now waiting for the release of Roy, where she plays a double role for the first time. Jacky says she hasn’t had time to take a break after Kick. “There was a time when I would go from one audition to the next, now there’s so much work that I cannot even take a day’s break,” she says. Speaking of her role in Roy, she says, “The idea of playing a double role was initially intimidating. But after I had worked in Kick with the biggest superstar of India, I had a lot more confidence to take on this challenge. I was apprehensive when I read the script of Roy as I had too many dialogues, and the lines too were tough. I realised that I would have to work really hard on my speech. Also, the film has been shot in sync sound, which again leaves very little room for mistakes.” “And Hindi is always scary for me,” she adds with a laugh. She recalls how she would learn the lines like she would learn her lessons by heart in school.
Another project, Brother, has her playing a character vastly different from her previous films. “I play a young mother in that. I have watched my parents bring us up and how they faced every challenge to give us the best. I am taking a leaf out of that to shape my role. I used to observe my mother as a child, especially when she would be getting ready for work. She was always so well groomed. Classy and sophisticated, and that’s something I aspired to be too. Being presentable and looking good, no matter what, is important to me. So I’m like my mom in many ways,” she says.
Known to be an animal lover, Jacqueline works closely with Peta, she was even named the ‘Woman of the Year’ by the organisation last month. She keeps a lot of pets at home too. “My home is like a mini zoo. We were four siblings and we grew up loving animals. Right now we have three male and four female dogs, along with two cats, rabbits, fish, parrots and turtles. The condition of illegally kept horses in Mumbai bothers me a lot. Yes, there are people who make money by running the carts, it’s of course their livelihood. I’m an active participant for Peta, hope we are able to make things happen legally,” says Jacky.
In the industry Jacqueline calls Sonam her best friend. She even admits to taking beauty tips from Sonam. “Every time she discovers an amazing new product, she shares it with me. We have lots of fun generally. I find her a genuinely nice person, caring, loyal and trustworthy. And I must add that she does a lot for her friends,” says Jackie. Besides Sonam, the actress includes Riteish Deshmukh, Sujoy Ghosh and Sajid Nadiadwala among her khaas dosts. “My career started with Sujoy and Riteish. They believed in me. And for Kick, it was Sajid and Salman who guided me throughout. I hold them in very high regard,” Jacqueline adds.
