Fire alarm: The set of the show Comedy Nights with Kapil was destroyed completely
While incidents of fire on TV show sets are increasing, those in charge say that every precaution is taken
Sets catching fire in the TV world are commonplace these days. Luckily, there have been no loss of lives or injuries in recent times. But short-circuits or in the case of the latest mishap — the generator on the sets for SRK’s game show Sabse Shaana Kaun? catching fire when the superstar was shooting the finale episode with Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt and Anushka Sharma — have increased.
Fortunately, the damage to property in this instance was minimum. But Kapil Sharma’s show Comedy Nights was not so lucky as the entire set was destroyed in fire recently.
It was divine intervention that seemed to have saved the technicians on the mythological show Devon Ke Dev... Mahadev as five fire engines were needed to douse the fire.
Actors shooting for the show Yeh Hai Mohabbatein too had a major scare when fire erupted during shooting. Even the cast of Jamai Raja went through the scary experience of having to deal with fire breaking out during work.
Since no major injuries have taken place, production houses appear not to be concerned about the problem. In most cases, the main reason for the fires is short circuit. But given the number of fire incidents, nobody seems to be doing much to fix the problem.
Siddharth Basu, the producer of India Poochega Sab Se Shanna Kaun, says, “Actually the fire did not take place inside the studio. It happened outside due to external cable power failure. The fire was not major and it was brought under control. These kind of incidents can happen even in our house.”
He adds, “We do take proper measures to ensure that these things don’t happen. No one is allowed to carry any inflammatory stuff inside. All the other necessary measures inside are taken care of. Fire extinguishers are also in place.”
Yeh Ristha Kya Kehlata Hai’s producer Rajan Shah too says that his production house takes every precaution to ensure that those working on the sets are safe. “Fire safety measures are mandatory. There is a section of people who take utmost care of this issue. They also educate people on the subject. Fire drills and power control is managed by experienced hands.”
Sachin Mohite, the producer of Begusaraye, also feels that it’s unfair to blame production houses for such accidents because these things can happen in spite of every precaution taken.
If so many precautions are being taken, why the accidents? Ravindra Gautam truthfully answers, “Shooting requires a lot of high volateg lights and there are wires everywhere. The sets are mostly made of wood and paint which are highly flammable. Light cables are often old and worn out and technicians are not well educated on safety measure. Also, many sets these days are inside industrial godowns or warehouses where there are not many fire exits. Fire extinguishers are there but in case of emergency everyone is searching for them! Most of our sets are potential deathtraps!”
