Compliments don’t get better than this

Pankhuri Awasthy as Razia Sultan
Pankhuri Awasthy as Razia Sultan
Khalida Turi, who plays Razia Sultan’s mother in the popular show, is often told that she looks more like her elder sister. Khalida and Pankhuri, who plays Razia, talk about their roles and more
If you met them on the road, you would never guess that they play mother and daughter on screen. And Khalida Turi, who plays Qutub Begum, the mother of Razia Sultan in the show of the same name, takes the complement with pride.
“You are not the first one to say that I look like her (Pankhuri Awasthy, who plays Razia) sister. Many people have complimented me regarding this. It feels challenging as well as superb, because I play a mom. I am not married in real life and being called mom gives me a sense of pride. We have to go through a lot of auditions, look tests etc. before we get a role. So, having gone through these various tests and then reliving a character obviously makes us feel good. And compliments always bring the best out in an actor.”
About Pankhuri, Khalida says, “She is a respectful and courteous girl. She is grounded as well as loving. She never throws any tantrums and we share a great bonding. Playing her mother, I have actually developed motherly love and affection for her. Also, living here in Umergaon we do not have to face any difficulties in commuting (as the sets are there). All of us enjoy our work.”
Meanwhile, the 23-year-old Pankhuri is having a great time on the sets. “Before this I was working as an assistant marketing manager in ITC, in Delhi. However, I always wanted to be an actor. Since I am from Lucknow, I have that poise and dignity that this character needs,” she says.
“I have done research on Razia, and my director has helped me perform the character to the best of my abilities. It is a creative as well as a historical show, at this point in time, I will not be able to reveal anything.”
She adds, “I am happy to be playing Razia Sultan. She personifies women’s empowerment.”
Both Pankhuri and Khalida are in awe of the sets erected in Umergaon for the show. The architecture is Turkish/ Moroccan while the blue domes similar to Afghanistan’s Jami Masjid and Samarkand (Uzbekistan) looks great. Pankhuri adds that thanks to the sets, they feel as if they actually belong to that era.
“I like the poise in the character and can relate to Razia when I am attired like her… the attitude comes along with the attire. I also took lessons in sword fighting…it was great,” she says, adding, “I am happy to be living in Umergaon where the sets are. I do not have any friends or family here in Mumbai so for me its fun living at the location. And when I feel like shopping or eating anything special, I travel to Mumbai.”

Be‘cuss’ words can lead to wars

NH10, produced by Anushka along with Anurag Kashyap was subjected to several cuts despite being rated as ‘Adults Only’ by CBFC
As the ongoing tiff between Censor board and the film fraternity rages on without an end in sight, celebrities tell us what they think would best resolve the issue
Validation of certification in films has dominated discussions all over the country in the recent past. And while the ongoing discord has pitted the film industry directly against censor board, it also seems to have brought the film fraternity under a single umbrella in an attempt to project a unified opposition, wherein many opined that creativity and freedom of speech need not be curtailed under any circumstance. While in the opinion that adult content has to be certified accordingly, the common consensus seems to be that no one has the right to ban a film.
The censor board’s latest salvo is a list of cuss words that it believes ought to be banned in films.
With the situation showing no sign of mellowing down, whether a revised rating system will actually help seems to be the million-dollar question.
With many prominent actors and filmmakers having been at the receiving end of the censor board’s ongoing onslaught, we found out what they had to say on the issue and this is what has been revealed.
Aamir Khan
We should allow the censor board to take action. It takes time, but they will take the right decisions. We should not have any problem. But at the same time, adults can decide what to watch and what not to. We can work out a rating system. I know I have made films like Delhi Belly, but it all depends on the script of the film. I hate censorship of any kind, because we are all grown ups and understand the implications. But we should not misuse the freedom given to us.
Mahesh Bhatt
From the first film I have made, I have had problems. Anybody who dares to question the mass concept you have to deal with opposition. It is democracy, but don’t come and break theatres.
Amitabh Bachchan
If a painter is asked to use only certain colours when he paints, you will be curbing him. If I am playing the role of a smoker how can you stop him from smoking on screen? If you aesthetically add a disclaimer, it’s fine. Abroad, many films come with a warning, what can be watched and what cannot be by certain age groups.
Shah Rukh Khan
This has been going on for a long time. A better picture of the censor board without differentiation should be brought in — be it in caste, colour or sex. Films do have a negative effect; if you have a generic rule for everything then it’s going to be troublesome. I don’t know why there should be a finalised list, they are just guidelines. But they can make a lot more categories and should increase the rating system and introduce more ratings like under 10 or strictly for adults.”
Anurag Kashyap
I will continue to fight with the CBFC. I have never hesitated to voice my opinion against the whims and fancies of the censor board officials, who went on to stall the release of my film, Ugly. I was forced to release it later, as it was pirated. However, I must thank my stars as I am making films here in India and not in Iraq or Iran, where the situation is much worse. My latest film NH10 was given several cuts though the film was strictly certified as, ‘Adults’.
Shabana Azmi
Society has changed now and that needs to be recognised. We can’t make rules just for the sake of making them. The CBFC can certify a film but they cannot ban it.
Richa Chaddha
We were more liberal few years ago. When Amitabh Bachchan lit a cigarette they didn’t carry a disclaimer. We have become regressive now. Culture can be inculcated, not taught. Films need to reflect what is happening in society.
Om Puri
They have to make laws. Too much is being shown in films. Women are used for titillation. Look at the dance movements and dresses they are wearing. It does tempt people to commit rape.
Emraan Hashmi
How cautious can one be? Everyone has a mind of his own and you have to understand films are for entertainment. Unless it’s very demeaning for a woman, which I would stand against, but then we have the censor board for that. With such directives one ends up making boring films. One needs to take cinematic liberties.
Prakash Jha
You have to be strong enough. Most of the filmmakers are businessmen. Nobody wants to fight for the freedom of expression. People who are agitated know this. Issues are exaggerated more for media consumption and the objective is popularity.
Radhika Apte
No one can decide what you should watch or shouldn’t watch. Everyone has the liberty to make a decision and I don’t think there should be censorship.

‘Life has come a full circle for me’

Ashish Sharma
Ashish Sharma
Ashish Sharma, who plays himself in the show Tujhse Naaraz Nahi Zindagi, talks about why he accepted the real-life show and how it’s different from Rangrasiya
Ashish Sharma will be seen as a radio jockey in the upcoming show Tujhse Naaraz Nahi Zindagi. The actor will be interacting with regular people and will get them to open up about their lives, hopes and struggles. “The show is about the struggles of common people who are celebs in their own right. We look for real heroes from all walks of life. I have realised that these heroes are everywhere, one only needs to look. The show is about how they manage their life hurdles and come out with flying colours,” says Ashish.
“I was getting many offers for different shows but I was waiting for something that I would love to be part of. And this show came along which gave me time for myself as well a huge amount of satisfaction professionally,” he says, adding, “I am an RJ in the show and I play myself. In fact, the journey of these people is told through me. Nothing is scripted and their stories are told truthfully.”
Talking about accepting the show, he adds, “I was interested in doing something appealing. I have never done something like this before. It was very exciting… like coming back to my roots. Life seemed to have come a full circle.”
TNNZ is a far cry from his other hit show Rangrasiya. “My character in Rangrasiya was emotional. It was a sensitive role. But over here I simply play myself. With every story I have taken so many things with me. I do pick a leaf or two from their journeys, which I tell. Every single ‘celeb’ has inspired me,” he says.
“We have finished almost 10 stories. All of them are inspirational. Viewers will be left spellbound and are surely going to be moved, as was I. One thing is for sure, their struggle will give hope to one and all.”
Ashish, who had taken a long break after Nach Baliye, adds, “I had quite a few torn muscles therefore I had to mend them and underwent treatment for the same… I had to undergo rigorous physiotherapy. Also, I went on a long holiday with my wife and family. During the Rangrasiya days I could not give her enough time. We visited Amsterdam, Maldives and also went to Rome.”
About his production plans, he adds, “We are planning a couple of shows as well as some feature films… we do not have any scripts right now.”
He is also thankful that TNNZ is not as hectic as the other shows. “This show is completed very peacefully. I have no rush for shooting.”
Ashish, who is known as the hottest star in the industry because of his role in Rangrasiya, adds in parting, “I am happy that people feel that way about me. Honestly, the only thing we actors crave for is for people to appreciate our work. Giving titles in any capacity makes me feel good; I feel honoured.”

Sreesanth to become a father in May

Deccan Chronicle | Lipika Varma | March 12, 2015, 18.03 pm IST
Mumbai: Cricketer turned actor S. Sreesanth has quite a few things to cheer about these days, the prime being that he will become a father in May.
“I am giving ample time to my wife these days and I have not given any dates for May to anyone. I am going through a happy phase now. Whatever has happened (the IPL spot fixing scandal) may have been for the best, or else at this juncture I would not have been able to give my wife ample time. Thanks to the blessings of god,” he says.
Sreesanth adds that a boy or girl is not important. “I am not interested in a boy or a girl. I want an ‘angel’ in the family. I am looking forward to being a father.”
The first film he signed was Pooja Bhatt’s 'Cabaret'. “My father Santhakumaran Nair has always motivated me. I remember after the IPL spot fixing scandal, he told me, “If you wait for cricket to happen, you will turn fat munching potato chips and getting addicted to PlayStation.”

“It is then films happened to me. After Cabaret I have signed Woh Kaun Thi, directed by Aditya Atul. I play a Gujarati guy in the film. It is going to be a challenging role as speaking Gujarati is going to be really tough. I will also be doing a Telugu film and a Malayalam film in which I will play a jailer or a cop.”

Sreesanth is also busy writing his autobiography, 'Supreme Silence'. “It signifies my name - Sri is ‘supreme’ while Shanth is ‘silence’. But I would not want my biography to be made into a film. Honestly speaking if at all it is made, it will be a most controversial one. I always like to speak the truth, therefore it should never be made,” he concludes
