NH10, produced by Anushka along with Anurag Kashyap was subjected to several cuts despite being rated as ‘Adults Only’ by CBFC
As the ongoing tiff between Censor board and the film fraternity rages on without an end in sight, celebrities tell us what they think would best resolve the issue
Validation of certification in films has dominated discussions all over the country in the recent past. And while the ongoing discord has pitted the film industry directly against censor board, it also seems to have brought the film fraternity under a single umbrella in an attempt to project a unified opposition, wherein many opined that creativity and freedom of speech need not be curtailed under any circumstance. While in the opinion that adult content has to be certified accordingly, the common consensus seems to be that no one has the right to ban a film.
The censor board’s latest salvo is a list of cuss words that it believes ought to be banned in films.
With the situation showing no sign of mellowing down, whether a revised rating system will actually help seems to be the million-dollar question.
With many prominent actors and filmmakers having been at the receiving end of the censor board’s ongoing onslaught, we found out what they had to say on the issue and this is what has been revealed.
Aamir Khan
We should allow the censor board to take action. It takes time, but they will take the right decisions. We should not have any problem. But at the same time, adults can decide what to watch and what not to. We can work out a rating system. I know I have made films like Delhi Belly, but it all depends on the script of the film. I hate censorship of any kind, because we are all grown ups and understand the implications. But we should not misuse the freedom given to us.
Mahesh Bhatt
From the first film I have made, I have had problems. Anybody who dares to question the mass concept you have to deal with opposition. It is democracy, but don’t come and break theatres.
Amitabh Bachchan
If a painter is asked to use only certain colours when he paints, you will be curbing him. If I am playing the role of a smoker how can you stop him from smoking on screen? If you aesthetically add a disclaimer, it’s fine. Abroad, many films come with a warning, what can be watched and what cannot be by certain age groups.
Shah Rukh Khan
This has been going on for a long time. A better picture of the censor board without differentiation should be brought in — be it in caste, colour or sex. Films do have a negative effect; if you have a generic rule for everything then it’s going to be troublesome. I don’t know why there should be a finalised list, they are just guidelines. But they can make a lot more categories and should increase the rating system and introduce more ratings like under 10 or strictly for adults.”
Anurag Kashyap
I will continue to fight with the CBFC. I have never hesitated to voice my opinion against the whims and fancies of the censor board officials, who went on to stall the release of my film, Ugly. I was forced to release it later, as it was pirated. However, I must thank my stars as I am making films here in India and not in Iraq or Iran, where the situation is much worse. My latest film NH10 was given several cuts though the film was strictly certified as, ‘Adults’.
Shabana Azmi
Society has changed now and that needs to be recognised. We can’t make rules just for the sake of making them. The CBFC can certify a film but they cannot ban it.
Richa Chaddha
We were more liberal few years ago. When Amitabh Bachchan lit a cigarette they didn’t carry a disclaimer. We have become regressive now. Culture can be inculcated, not taught. Films need to reflect what is happening in society.
Om Puri
They have to make laws. Too much is being shown in films. Women are used for titillation. Look at the dance movements and dresses they are wearing. It does tempt people to commit rape.
Emraan Hashmi
How cautious can one be? Everyone has a mind of his own and you have to understand films are for entertainment. Unless it’s very demeaning for a woman, which I would stand against, but then we have the censor board for that. With such directives one ends up making boring films. One needs to take cinematic liberties.
Prakash Jha
You have to be strong enough. Most of the filmmakers are businessmen. Nobody wants to fight for the freedom of expression. People who are agitated know this. Issues are exaggerated more for media consumption and the objective is popularity.
Radhika Apte
No one can decide what you should watch or shouldn’t watch. Everyone has the liberty to make a decision and I don’t think there should be censorship.
