Playing a villain is tougher: Amrapali Gupta
Amrapali Gupta, who plays the main villain in the show Qubool Hai, has captured the hearts of audiences with her acting prowess and her looks. She says that it does not make a difference to her whether a role is positive or negative. “I did begin my television stint doing positive roles — Pyar Ke Do Naam…, Neem Neem Shahad Shahad etc, and now I am doing a negative role in Qubool Hai. In fact, I only had a cameo role in QH, but the writer and director sensed my talent and in Season 2 I was given Begum Sahiba’s role.
“This character, which earlier had shades of grey, has slowly become villainous. In fact, I love playing positive as well as negative roles.”
She, however, says that negative roles are tougher. “There’s a lot more to do. Your talent can excel beyond limits provided you know what you can add to your negative shade. For example, I tried to add a little psychotic behaviour to this character,” she says, adding, “I have been inspired by villains like Amrish Puri, K.K. Menon and Amjad Khan. There are no boundaries while enacting negative characters and we are free to perform in any manner, it’s fun.”
But playing a villain has its negative sides too. “Once a woman came up to me and said, ‘You are doing a great performance’. No sooner did I thank her, she said, ‘You are a real bitch!’ There have been many instances wherein fans have not asked for autographs as they feel I am a really bad human being.
“Sometimes, when they interact with me, they ask me, ‘You are so nice and have such a positive attitude, how can you then perform so wickedly? This kind of compliment makes me feel that I am in seventh heaven.”
“I felt proud when during a recent Colors party, a big producer told my husband Yash: ‘If your wife’s track is discontinued in QH the show may even shut down’. But I do not allow success to go to my head,” she adds.
Talking about the serial’s future story line, Amrapali says, “It’s going to be interesting; my role will focus on taking revenge.” From whom, she doesn’t elaborate, but this track may be linked to avenging Begum Sahiba’s death in the show.
Talking about falling in love and marrying Yash, she says, “We met on the sets of Teen Bhauraniya and started interacting and slowly we realised that we liked each other and thus tied the knot. We are not insecure about our relationship, but since Yash is a little busier than I, at times I do get angry with him for not giving me time. On the other hand, I also feel great about Yash doing so well.
“At times it feels funny that my husband’s character catches criminals while I essay a villain’s role.”
She adds, “We are both very possessive… even if I talk to my relatives for a long time he does not like it. I too dislike him talking to his sisters all th time etc. But otherwise we are very close to each other and neither of us will ever deceive the other.
“Lastly, I would love to play a positive character too. Usually people form wrong notions. The director/producer/writer feel anyone with cat eyes will be the most suited in a negative role. But this is not true.”
