From her debut with Student Of The Year when she was just 18, Alia Bhatt has come a long way in a few short years. Today she is thought of as one of best actresses in the industry. DC caught up with Alia and her mother Soni Razdan for a small chat.

About her daughter’s success, Soni says, “I am happy that Alia has attained success at an early age. However, being a mother, I sometimes do fear for her success — Kahin kisi ki nazar na lag jaye — hope she does not catch the evil eye.

“Alia is not very Net savvy like Bhatt Sahab and me. Both of us are mostly on our laptops, phones etc. But it was Alia who taught me how to Skype,” she says with a smile.

Alia adds, “Ever since I was a child I would always see dad’s laptop and other technical stuff lying in his room. He is always on the laptop. My mom is also always busy sending messages, and at times I get fed up watching them at it all the time. I am not very Net savvy and I do not like wasting my time on messages, FB, Twitter.”

Alia is 22 now and the last four years in the industry have been a whirlwind. “Now at 22, work is worship for me. I always feel that I need to give my best. I believe that if I put in my best efforts, the results will always be great. But success can never get to my head, I take it as a part and parcel of my work. And I have a long way to go yet.”

The lead actors of Dosti... Yariyaan.. Manmarzian... are as diverse as their characters. We talk to them about their roles, bonding off-screen and more
Aham Sharma (Arjun Mehra)
About bagging the role of Arjun, a mysterious guy with a past, who joins the advertising agency Bird Song, where the rest of the main characters work, Aham says, “I played Karna in Mahabharata and having worked with Swastik Productions earlier, they called me for an audition of this role.”
About the shades of grey in his character, Aham says, “This is just the beginning; the different layers of the character are yet to be revealed… Let the tale unfold… The role is enacted according to the given situations. People can relate to the character as it has many facets.
“In real life too I have different dimensions and that is the reason I love this character and opted to perform it… Such characters are very complex and I bet there is a lot more to offer.”
When asked whether he will eventually be paired opposite Sam or whether Neil will steal her, he says, “It’s all fun…you guys need to keep guessing. He is smart and he always sees to it that whatever he has never goes to anyone else.”
About his personal life, Aham, says, “I am from Patna. My dad wanted me to be an engineer but I wanted to act. So after working in a government job for a while, I moved to Mumbai and attended acting workshops. I also did theatre. I debuted with Chand Ke Par Chalo and did a couple of other shows and films too.
“I am a happily married man,” he says, adding, “My wife is not from the industry but she is not insecure at all as we share a great rapport.”
Sharavan Reddy (Neil)
Talking about his character Neil, Sharavan says, “I am a happy-go-lucky guy in the show. ”
About the show’s future, he adds, “We are not aware of how it will unfold so I do not know whether I will be paired opposite Radhika or Sam. In fact the writers like to pen in accordance to the taste of the audiences. Things change on a day to day basis. Everything depends on the reaction of the audiences.
“While auditioning, I was clearly told, ‘If this character does not work, the show will not work’. The character takes everything in his stride positively; even if something is not right, he doesn’t get stressed out.”
On a personal note, he says, “When I get stressed in real life, I like to be by myself. I am a private person and I do not share much with others. I like to read fiction.”
Asked whether he will emerge as the sole male lead of the show or whether he will have to share the limelight with Arjun, he says, “It’s an ensemble cast and everyone has his own take and the character acts according to the situation. This is not a conventional show. We are trying to present some relatable modern tales. People easily relate to all the characters and everyone is given a fair chance to be able to showcase their potential through their performances.”
Monica Sehgal (Radhika)
This is my debut show. I am happy about my character and the fact that it does give the feel as though it’s the main lead,” says Monica, who plays Radhika, arguably the show’s main lead and the girl who binds everyone together in the show.
Originally from Ujjain, Monica, a state-level badminton player, shifted to Mumbai to join St. Xavier’s College, but ultimately decided to pursue her acting dreams after auditioning for and getting the role of Radhika.
About her character, she says, “I cannot say how my character will pan out in the future. But being from a small town, I can identify with the character. Her story seems to be similar to mine as I too wanted to pursue my dreams of making my own identity.
“I remember when we had gone on a promotional trip to Bhyander, a suburb in Mumbai, people came to me for autographs. Some ladies came with their families and told me that they had taken extra pains to dress up etc. to click photographs with me… I was in seventh heaven.”
Kashmira Irani (Sam)
Swastik Productions loved my performance as a conjoined twin in the show Amber-Dhara and the writer penned the character of Sam with me in mind. The character is very realistic and I am happy to portray Sam, with her many layers,” says Kashmira.
Talking about Sam’s best friend Neil hating her possible love-interest Arjun, Kashmira says, “In friendship, at times you do encounter such situations, this is possessiveness. I believe friends have a great vibe and if they really like each other they will go out of their ways to protect their friends. Similar to the show, we are all buddies even off screen.”
On her personal life, she adds, “Currently, I am single but I am happy as this is the best phase of my life as an actor, I have no complaints. “My mother is happy that I am excelling as an actor. We are from Pune and I have completed my acting course from New York,” she says, adding, “I love travelling and as soon as I get some time, I will travel to Miami, Greece and Rome.”

Priyanka Chopra’s next international outing will be as the lead in ABC’s Quantico, in which she plays an FBI agent. She is also thrilled! “I was shocked when I received the offer. The show will be telecast all over the world, to approximately 180 countries including India,” says Priyanka, when asked about her reaction.
“When artistes and stars from all over the world meet me and greet me I do feel nice. Our films have travelled all over the world and this is indeed a fact to feel proud about. The power of Hindi cinema is widely known,” she adds.
And talking about prejudices she faced in the US early in her life, the actress reveals, “I had faced a lot of problems while I was studying in America… I was called ‘brownie’. They also criticised Indian mannerisms and would also constantly laugh at them. So, when I was approached to do this show, I told them I should be treated as an actor… If my Indianess is respected I do not mind exploring this option.
“I am treated like everyone else and I am proud about it but at the same time I am also extremely nervous. But at the same time, I am sure opportunities will increase as we will now not be offered only stereotype roles. Also, in today’s age of social media, we read about everyone and know about people working all over the World. The world has definitely become smaller. Directors, artistes and technicians need to be treated on par with their profession.”
Closer home, Priyanka’s next is Dil Dhadhakne Do in which she plays Ranveer Singh’s sister. Ironically, Ranveer and her play husband and wife in Baji Rao Mastani.

My funny side is a defence mechanism: Ranveer Singh

Lipika Varma | May 28, 2015, 22.05 pm IST
He’s officially ‘okay’ after falling off a horse early this year and now, Ranveer Singh is back in action  promoting the upcoming, Dil Dhadakne Do. But what was he doing during this period of forced inactivity? “It was definitely not the case of an empty mind being the devil’s workshop. I watched all those films I had missed, Badlapur, Mary Kom... It was a wonderful cinematic experience. I also watched some Italian and Spanish films and a few Hollywood films too.
“I have now started physiotherapy and my hand is improving (the actor had injured a shoulder when he fell off). I am also waiting to get back to work,” he says. The past few months have been beneficial in another way for the actor  a lot of family time. “This was the first time that I really bonded with my dad and sister. Dad had always allowed me to do whatever I wanted to do in life and always supported me.”
Ranveer also feels sorry for his father who is currently looking into the legal issues that had sprung up following the AIB Roast. “I am feeling very sorry for my dad who has to look into this issue as I am busy with work,” he says, “This is his time to rest but he has to follow up.” On a different note he adds, “I feel happy when icons like Anil Ji (Kapoor) and Govinda praise my work. Also, getting a letter from Amitabh Bachchan, made me feel on seventh heaven.”
Reminiscing about his childhood, Ranveer says,  “I remember I had been to a puja in Anilji’s house when I was in class 3 — I had three studs in the ear, a fat little boy with two front teeth missing with a mohawk. During the puja he looked at me and asked my Dadaji, ‘Who is this guy? Yeh zindagi mein jarur kuch karenga.’
The actor adds that he is not all about monkeying about. “I am over-sensitive and I’m always thinking and to counter this habit, I project my lighter side as sort of a defense mechanism, which makes it easier for me to be cheerful.” Ranveer, who plays Priyanka Chopra’s brother in Dil Dhadakne Do, adds, “I played her friend in Gunday and am playing her brother in DDD, while in Baji Rao, she is my wife. But I can truly confess, mein Priyanka ka achcha bhai hu.”

Mumbai: Anil Kapoor can still give the younger lot of actors a run for their money. Ahead of the release of Dil Dhadakne Do, the senior actor talks about his children, his work ethics and more.

Talking about his role of a patriarch in Dil Dhadakne Do, he says, “The character controls and rules the family. It’s either his way or the highway. He is married but also has affairs… The film is real and entertaining. It has a lot of humour.”

Still a sex symbol:

“In real life girls approach me a lot,” says Anil, adding, “In our profession we are constantly under the glare. But one has to draw the line and make a decision… there’s your wife and children. You either do something that gives you momentary pleasure or have a happy life. I have followed that all my life. I would be lying if I said that I was not distracted, but you have to make up your mind.”

On experimenting:

“Most of the times when I have taken risks, it has paid off. People said a lot of things but I decided to go ahead. And when the risks paid off, people said I had great vision and that I was a game changer,” he says. Anil says that this is the best phase of his life, “I have never felt so good about myself and my career. I am always looking for challenges. The role has to attract me.”

Kids’ support:

Anil is all praises for the support and opinion of his three children, Rhea, Harsh and Sonam, he says, “When I was doing Slumdog Millionaire, Harsh and Rhea had a big hand in my decisions. Sonam also gave me feedback. They are my reality check.”

He adds that him and Sonam being on screen together would be a great proposal. “Zoya (Akhtar) was clear that she would not cast us together. But I am waiting for someone to cast us both in a film. We are open to doing a film with a good story.”

On Sonam and Rhea:

“Sonam is something very special, so wait and watch. She is very generous. She is a big star but she is different. This is just the beginning,” he says. On his younger daughter Rhea, whose next film will have music by A.R. Rahman, he says, “I am proud and have heard the music. It’s fantastic.  But Sonam is not a part of it. She is doing two films and will be producing it.”
