Revealed: Salman Khan copies a Bollywood Khan

The actor confesses that taking note of Aamir Khan’s popular promotional tactics, he believes in reaching out to his fans directly

Salman Khan finally shared the first ever trailer of his upcoming film 'Jai Ho' in an ingenious manner. It was carried out amidst hoots and claps of cheering fans gathered in Chandan cinema and a curious media.

Ask him about following Aamir Khan’s footsteps and opting for innovative promotional strategy for the trailer launch and he instantly responds,“Definitely, after wearing the cap of Aamir Khan my mind has started working like his. ‘Jai Ho’ will also ‘Dhoom Machayegi’ (create a bang).”

'Jai Ho' wasn't the first chioce as the film's title. An ever-obedient son, Salman reportedly changed the title from 'Mental' to the present title at his father Salim Khan's behest. On a light note he says, “ Because I am mental, that’s why its earlier title was named so.” Then on a serious note, he added, “Well ‘Mental’ was just a working title. And no sooner did we decide to give the film an apt title my father wanted us to change it to ‘Jai Ho’. As a son I think every son needs to respect the feelings and opinion of his father even if he may be a grown up man of marriageable age or being a father himself. Needless to say then we decided to change the title of ‘Mental’ to ‘Jai ho’.”

Talking about how he identifies with the common man, he shares, “I am also like a common man. Being born to a family of filmdom, I feel I am lucky. I have always liked to ride a bike and commute by rickshaws like any other commoner. Also like any other common man, I would like to punish any person who may have teased a girl in my presence.” Looking back at his journey of becoming an actor, he shares, “Having bestowed upon a chance of playing the lead hero in Sooraj Barjatiya’s first film ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’, I have got the opportunity of becoming an actor. I thank God for it. Like a common man I also feel humbled that I am here only because of the fans that have supported me year after year. We make films not for the theatres but for our fans. And so I wanted to get directly in touch with them with our very first promos of ‘Jai Ho’.”

Expressing his views on eve teasing he adds, “If a girl is teased by anyone, we need to raise the voice against this misconduct. And the eve teaser need to be thrashed to teach him a lesson.”

Taking a dig at the media he added, “I thought if the fans get an opportunity to have the real feel of watching the promos with us, the media we will see it for themselves. So, it is good that we need to bridge the gap with our fans. I love my fans and like to share my thoughts as well my feelings with them directly. Therefore I tried to share the promos with them. It took me to change at least three to four posters and then bring this final poster to them. Hope they like it.”

Coming to the reality that every star faces he says, “Being away from the limelight and cameras which every actor has to face one day or the other and all of us do feel bad. Then the respect, adulation and praises what we will get for the seeds we have sown through our performances in the film and our good deeds will keep me going. But I hope that time does not come soon.”

‘Jai Ho’ is a remake of A R Murugadoss’ ‘Stalin’ starring Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi which also took inspiration from Hollywood’s ‘Pay It Forward’ and helmed by Salman’s younger brother Sohail Khan.  It is all set to release on Jan 24, 2014.

‘Tu Cheese Badi Hai Mast Mast’ to go on floors soon

Ashok Kamble talks about his directorial comeback in Bollywood
Director cum producer, Ashok Kamble who switched over to producing Marathi cinema after successfully churning hits in Bollywood is ready for directorial come back with ‘Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast’ starring Riteish Deshmukh and Shreyas Talpade in pivotal roles. He talks about how with corporate funding, the space for independent producers like him is rapidly shrinking and the joy he finds having things his way despite the hiccups.
When asked about the title, ‘Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast’ that mirrors a hit song of the nineties, will there be any copyright issues? To which, he clarifies, “We are ready with the script. I do not think we will have any problem with the title of the film, which is also a song number. We have duly signed the title and will go on the floors in 2014.”
About the cast of the movie, he continues, “We have decided to sign Riteish Deshmukh and Shreyas Talpade for the pivotal roles in this film. The rest of the cast and credit will comprise of new comers. The story line is very intriguing and I am sure this will be a great Hindi come back film for me as a director.”
Having co-produced ‘Ek Ladka, Ek Ladki’, a Salman starrer film in 1991, will you not like to work with him again? And he replied, “Why not? Who will not like to work with Salman Khan? But then he should agree to work with us! Maybe, sometimes in the future if I have a good script for him, I will definitely approach him.”
Reminiscing about how things have drastically changed with corporate funding entering Bollywood, he shares, “Yes! I tried my hand in production, before venturing into direction to know every nuances of filmmaking. In 1992 things had started changing drastically in Hindi film industry with the existence of the corporate world and now it has become difficult for single producers to be able to bring the films to the theaters.” About his switchover to Marathi films, he added, “So, I decided to direct Marathi films –‘Tujha Majhi Aayi’, a multi-starrer woman oriented film with Sonali Kulkarni in the lead. I was the first director to rope in Sadashiv Amrapurkar for a Marathi film as he was very active in Hindi film industry then.”
Talking about the present scenario on theatre bookings as he has released his latest Marathi flick, ‘Majhya Navryachi Baiko’, he shares, “It is really very difficult for Marathi films to sustain as there is a lot of theater hiccups. Especially when big films like ‘Dhom-3’ from big production house releases, the theaters are booked for almost two weeks. Therefore I had to discontinue the shows of ‘Majhya Navryachi Baiko’. However; the film continues its run in the single theatres.” And added, “This is owing to the corporate world we as single producers have to face a lot of problems. But getting my way with mediocre success also makes me feel great.”

Kareena Kapoor finds Mumbai unsafe “Earlier we would hear about rape stories from Delhi but now Mumbai too is not rape free”! By Lipika Varma Published Saturday, December 28, 2013

Kareena Kapoor finds Mumbai unsafe

“Earlier we would hear about rape stories from Delhi but now Mumbai too is not rape free”!

Kareena Kapoor is one Bollywood actress who does not believe in mincing her words and speaking her heart out. Recently while supporting the cause for women’s’ safety, Kareena openly shared her personal take on it.

“It was me who returned back the call for supporting the cause for women’s safety through this smart phone. I don’t think women’s safety in India is taken care of. With so many rapes happening I don’t feel even Mumbai is safe anymore. I decided to participate for the safety of women owing to so many rapes happening one after the other,” shares the heroine.

She continued in the same vein and added, “The recent rape of a journalist was indeed very shameful. I decided to be the part of this merely because I too have become very scared. Just two buildings next to my house, a lady who is a foreigner was raped recently. I learnt about it through the news channels and papers. Mumbai too has become very unsafe and this feeling has emerged in my heart since the last two years.”

Stressing on education as a panacea, Kareena says, “Yes, we need to eradicate illiteracy. Not only is it the sick mind of a handful of men who commit such heinous act. But the young adolescent also needs to be taught the lessons right from his primary roots. They need to be educated at the grass root level teaching them specifically that such acts should never even pass their minds. No one is born with a sick mind but owing to lack of knowledge, lack of proper environmental and poverty a man becomes frustrated.” And added, “I took the initiative to reach to people because I believe if the voice of actors can change someone to go ahead with good mind, then why not? I appreciate being associated with the cause of women safety.”

Adding about the feelings of her husband, Saif Ali Khan while she was coming for the meet she added, “Even Saif was eager to join such a good cause. He told me to put forth my mind specifically on this issue so that my thought process can at least bring in a change in the minds of the people. Why not? If being a star my voice can bring in some good changes in the society, I will definitely come ahead for such cause. Very soon I will be joining hands with an educational campaign which will look forward to educate people freely.”

Talking about not caring for security guards she says, “I and Saif always love to walk down to some restaurants late at night where we can relish food of our taste. We do not want to unnecessarily waste time on security guards. Saif and I love to walk our dog in the evenings too.”

Coming back to education for one and all she says, “In UK, free education is imparted especially on sex education also. We here in India need to educate one and all. Free education should be part of a daily course for everyone. I believe this will bring a lot of changes into the minds of men.”

All praises for women she quips, “Yes, we women have a ‘teesri inderi’ (third Eye) i.e women have a little more intelligence in comparison to men. This I say without being biased. So, women can always sense and try to evade such situations even before it could happen. And now with this messaging facilities they can choose people who could get the message immediately while their life in danger.” And added, “Awareness has to be brought in the rural India too. I do message my mom even today on reaching home from the shoot as I do reach home during the wee hours. And if I do not send her the message she gets panicky. Though I am married, yet I keep her updated.”

From Boom to Dhoom…Katrina Kaif rides a decade

Taking a nostalgic walk down the memory lane, the actress expresses satisfaction with her current state of affairs

Katrina Kaif will be completing ten years in the Bollywood. Having debuted with ‘Boom’ in 2003 and now with her action-packed role in ‘Dhoom 3’, the actress is satisfied with her current state of affairs.

“I have no time to look back. I am asked often about my journey in the film industry but the fact is that I have no time to look back. Everything is moving so fast that I am unable to even know as to what’s happening? My focus is on the future at the moment,” shares Katrina.

Having learnt so much from every film she shares, “Definitely, I have learnt so much from every film of mine. Having worked with Akshay for the first time in ‘Humko Diwana Kar Gaye”’, I came to realise as to how emotions have to be portrayed onto the Hindi silver screen. While in ‘Partner’ and ‘Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya’, Govinda and Salman starrer films I learnt the importance of comedy and being spontaneous while delivering dialogues in the scenes. ‘Namaste London’ saw me in an important character for the first time.” And continued, “Also, with ‘Race’, it was for the first time I developed great confidence within myself while performing in front of the camera. Here I realised that if I work hard, I can perform and dance exuberantly. Earlier while performing dance numbers, I would get nervous, which is not the same now. By the time I did ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara’ and ‘Meri Brother Ki Dulhan’, I turned very comfortable on par with acting. However with ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ and ‘Tiger’, I got different star image. With ‘Dhoom-3’, I have tried my hand in performing stunts too, helping me reach a different level.”

Katrina shares her hunger for fans’ love and says, “I really feel happy when I come to know that I have a lot of male as well as female fans who crave to follow me. Especially, when girls and wives want to impress their other halves by looking like me. More than money and fame, I would crave for the love and respect of people! As an actor I have learnt to be disciplined and yes, I can vouch for my hard work. I never leave any stone unturned on putting in my sincere and full efforts. I never like to give a chance to anyone to feel that I am shirking work. If any character that I play needs improvement, I take it seriously until I succeed in giving it the best.”

Talking about being lucky to have worked with all the three Khans, she shares, “I am lucky to have worked with all the three Khans (Salman, Aamir and Shahrukh) However, all three have a very powerful personality. All of them have worked hard to attain this position. They are still ruling the roost and to maintain this position they have to keep working harder. I share a different rapport with all three of them. Salman has seen me grow hence I feel most comfortable with him. He is one of the most important person in my life.”

“Whatever, the almighty God has bestowed upon me I am very happy. I do not crave for the number one position simply because if you lose it at that point you may feel disheartened. So, for me I believe in working hard and putting my best and leaving the rest to God,” shares the actress about her simple philosophy in life.

Move over Bollywood's Khans: Vidya, Madhuri, Sunny Leone are new heroes The new breed of cinema in Bollywood is empowering women and portraying them as the new heroes! By Lipika Varma Published Friday, December 27, 2013

Move over Bollywood's Khans: Vidya, Madhuri, Sunny Leone are new heroes

The new breed of cinema in Bollywood is empowering women and portraying them as the new heroes!

Bollywood filmmakers are churning out a high dose of female centric movies, with the top of the lot from the industry playing leading ladies. Vidya Balan set the example – she overshadowed her male counterparts in films like ‘The Dirty Picture’ and ‘Kahaani’. Girish Wankhede, chief exhibitor for ‘Kahaani’ said, “‘Kahaani’ had a versatile actress like Vidya Balan as well good content, hence the film did very well. But we also need to accept the fact that such women oriented films cannot cope up with the levels of the Khans.”
‘Kahaani’ released in approximately 1100 screen worldwide and grossed a whopping Rs 59 crores at the box office. It was made at a modest budget of Rs 8 crores, but worked with Vidya’s popularity of her previous hit. According to industry experts, not many actresses can carry a film on their shoulders. Distributor of ‘Ragini MMS’, Vinay Choksi said, “Very few women oriented films have done well at the box office windows, but the market is definitely changing. If the content is exuberant the film will do well.”
Director and producer, Rakesh Roshan is of the opinion that more and more women oriented subjects need to be highlighted in Bollywood. He shares,
“I am of the opinion that all kinds of intriguing subjects need to be made. And more so, women oriented subjects. I remember, when I made ‘Khoon Bhari Maang’ people thought I was mad and they said, “What kind of a film are you making? Will this work?” But it did very well at the box office.” He added further delving into the dynamics of the industry and says, “What happens in our industry is that if one kind of subject gets a hit at the box office, then people start making films on those subjects.
About getting theatres to screen such films, it is just that if the film is good then it has to run in cinema halls and now booking the theatre has also been very systematic. Films like ‘Kahaani’ and ‘The Dirty Picture’ can be made again but with a different portrayal.”
Actresses are no longer interested in the quintessential roles, that of a glam doll, rather they want to explore and experiment. Madhuri Dixit Nene will make a powerful comeback with ‘Gulab Gang’, portraying a rebellious gang leader. Welcoming the change she says, “Female actresses are no longer decorative additions in the film. Earlier films always saw women as victim or an avenger, but now she is being presented in a positive light with strong characters. They are no more getting abused. This change needs to be welcomed as women have substantial roles to play.” Katrina Kaif, who plays a villain in ‘Dhoom 3’ took up the challenge of learning the most difficult dance form and also train for acrobatics. On the other hand, Priyanka Chopra has shed her glamorous image and is leaning the nuances of Manipuri dialect to perfect her onscreen character of boxer Mary Kom.
Looking at the future Amod Mehra, trade analyst shared, “Definitely there cannot be a ‘Kahani’ or a ‘The Dirty Picture’ every time. But who knows, in coming times we might have even better movies than these two. Any film will work at the Box Office only if its content is intriguing, lest women-centric films. Otherwise the similar success cannot be repeated. Having big stars and good performers are like icing on the cake.” About the theatre booking and distribution of the movie, he added, “Anybody can hire any number of theatres as he pleases. You just have to pay the rent and decide on the number of screens you want the film to be shown. But that does not guarantee the success of that movie, irrespective of whether it has women-power in it or not.”
And the popularity for such films is increasing with the word of mouth publicity. Another film exhibitor, Manoj Desai points out, “In my experience of Bollywood, whenever there is a Khan film, the theatres are running packed but with female centric movies there is fewer audience as they feel there is less chance of entertainment. But now slowly the mindsets are changing, thanks to the word of mouth publicity. Bollywood is also changing its thought process of the male dominated world and introducing women power in our movies.”
Changing with the trends, Bollywood filmmakers have lined up half a dozen women oriented films for release in the next couple of years. Producers like Yash Raj Films, who have maintained a love-dovey factor in all their projects, have taken up a bold step with ‘Mardani’ in which Rani Mukerji will be portraying a tough cop. Talking about the trendsetter again, Vidya Balan will portray a strong detective in ‘Bobby Jasoos’, while the ever bold actress Kangna Ranaut will hold the gun for her next, ‘Revolver Rani’.
BOXES:
Vidya Balan as detective
: Vidya Balan has been a pioneer in women empowerment films and she will continue the same with ‘Bobby Jasoos’. She will be an intelligent ‘desi’ detective who uses disguises for her cases. A simpleton in the film, Vidya carriers a canvas backpack around for her sleuthing duties. She was recently shot in Hyderabad, dressed up as a beggar with huge beard; Vidya did an exceptional job of fooling the audiences, and it is said that more of such instances will follow. A special set has been erected in Hyderabad for the complete shooting of ‘Bobby Jasoos’, directed by Samar Shaikh and produced by Dia Mirza and her beau Sahil Sangha. Actress turned producer Dia said, “I feel, more and more women oriented subjects need to be made. Hence, we too decided to release a female empowered movie and will publicise it broadly.”
Madhuri Dixit, a female gang leader:
After her multiple comebacks didn’t work well, Madhuri Dixit Nene is set to make another power packed comeback with ‘Gulaab Gang’. The film is inspired from the true story of Sampat Pal, who took the initiative of fighting against social injustice with her female team, Gulabi Gang. Encouraging the idea, Madhuri said, “Women play an important role in the society, and their onscreen representation has also changed. My character is an important personality in the movie and not just standing by the women. I support the idea of representing brave women.” Mads will shed her dance diva image to portray a courageous role in ‘Gulab Gang’. The film will be set in a rustic background, where Madhuri and her gang of girls will wage a war against injustice to women. Joining Madhuri in this rebellious group of women is another ace actress Juhi Chawla. This film is directed by Soumik Sen and is set to release next year. Eager to tell the world the story of competitive women, producer Anubhav Sinha said, “With such projects we need to let the world know about the strong potential that women of our country possess.”
Priyanka Chopra as boxer Mary Kom
: Priyanka Chopra will play the onscreen avatar of celebrated boxer Mary Kom. She has been training vigorously for boxing and also to get into physique of the sportsperson.
Also, with the help of prosthetics, Piggy Chops will get transformed into Mary Kom for reel. This actress is also learning Manipuri for the biopic, to perfect her character. Priyanka is a staunch supporter of female oriented characters and shared, “It is the need of the hour to portray powerful female characters in our movies. Such films do well at the box office. My biopic on Olympian boxer and icon Mary Kom is a strong and alluring subject which has good prospects monetarily too.”
Rani Mukerji donning police uniform
: Bollywood’s versatile actress, Rani Mukerji will sport a gutsy avatar of a police officer in Yash Raj Film’s ‘Mardani’. Rani Mukherji, known for her sensuous image, will ditch the sexiness and adopt a uniformed look. Going the tough way, Rani will pick up the guns and impress her fans with some super action. A trainer has been assigned to the actress to shed the extra pounds and get in shape. Rani will also be practicing for raw action sequences. Ace filmmaker Pradeep Sarkar will be calling the shots for this bold women centric movie. In the past actresses Priyanka Chopra had portrayed a seductive cop in ‘Don 2’, however Rani will be tougher in her approach.
Kangna Ranaut as lady gangster
: Kangna Ranaut will wield the gun in an upcoming woman centric film titled, ‘Revolver Rani’. She is known to play bold female characters in films like ‘Tanu Weds Manu’, ‘Gangster’ and ‘Fashion’. Hence Kangna seemed the best choice for this character, however it was reportedly first offered to Tabu. Kangna plays a female outlaw and revolver will be her specialty in the movie. For her hardcore gangster character, Kangna had to take up lessons in handling an actual revolver. The basic story of ‘Revolver Rani’ will be a revenge saga, set in Hindi heartland.
Sunny Leone as a bold actress:
Western porn star Sunny Leone will let out her sensuous avatar in ‘Ragini MMS 2’. The film is a sequel to horror franchise, but Sunny will set the temperature soaring as she plays a hot and sexy Bollywood actress in the movie. ‘Ragini MMS 2’ is being touted as a ‘horrex’ film, a clever combination of horror and sex. Sunny Leone’s spine chilling sequences are being shot with a heavy dose of skin show and sleaze. This film is directed by Bhushan Patel. Producer Ekta Kapoor explains the need for such a ‘horrex’ film in today’s day as she says, “Visual effects in such a movie are of vital importance. After the success of the first film, expectations were raised. Hence we promise the audience most sexiest and scariest experience with Sunny Leone.” Newbie Sahil Prem will debut opposite the sensuous Sunny.
